Why garage slabs crack, how joints work and how repairs are chosen and hidden under a coating.
Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves as temperatures change, so cracks are normal. Joints are planned cracks that are cut or formed so the slab cracks in neat lines. Most cracks are hairline and harmless, though some show movement or height differences. Repairs fill and support them so a coating does not crack along the same lines.
We sort cracks by behavior. Stable hairlines can be filled with a rigid material, while moving cracks and expansion joints need flexible fillers. Control joints are often filled flush with a semi-rigid material to support the edges. Nashville clay soils and temperature swings add movement, so we tell you honestly when a crack may return. A coating cannot stop a slab from moving, but a good repair and the right system keep the floor looking tidy.
